Let’s talk about Ludovico Einaudi !

In this post we will talk about an italian contemporary pianist and composer that I love : Ludovico Einaudi. I think his style is a mix between classic, romantic but also minimalist. He has composed a lot of different works : many albums (studio or live), film and tv series soundtrack. I think that he is most famous for his film soundtracks like for The Intouchables and more recently Nomadland and The Father.

  • His life

Ludovico einaudi has been initiated to music from an early age thanks to his mother, who was an amateur pianist. He started to compose his own music as a teenager on a guitar before composing on a piano. He entered the Milan conservatory and graduated in composition. After his graduation he started to study with the renowned Italian composer Luciano Berio and was awarded a scholarship to go to a music festival.

Then he spent several years composing for the ballet, the cinema and the theater, as well as many pieces for orchestra and ensemble, which were performed in great places all over the world. It really was with his first album solo “Le Onde” in 1996 that he captured the piano world’s attention.

Here is the link to one of his concerts in London, at the royal albert hall, that I love because all the instruments are put in value together. If one day you need to listen to some relaxing or calm music : go see this !

Ludovico Einaudi is a very active and creative artist, indeed he has made about 25 albums and about 35 film and television scores. For this huge contribution he won many awards.

In 2019, he released a seven-part project named Seven Days Walking, with 7 albums at a rate of one per month.

Lately, on the 4th june he released a new compilation album called Cinema. It’s a collection of his 28 most popular songs for Film & Television, including two unreleased pieces.

He has also used his art and talent to defend causes such as here where he made a campaign with Green Peace for saving the Arctic. He's playing I think a dramatic song, in the middle of the arctic and we can see and hear (almost louder than the piano) the ice falling down around him.

"Arriving at a simple piece of music is a very difficult balance because, in being simple, you could easily be banal, so maybe it's more difficult to write a simple piece of music than a 12-tone piece where no one understands exactly what it is about." - Ludovico Einaudi

I think that If you’re a beginner or someone who hasn't played for a while this is a good choice of artist to work on because first the score does not require too much time to decrypt. And secondly I know it’s disappointing and discouraging to repeat the same passage 30 times and still not succeed or don’t see the results of the work. With Ludovico Einaudi there are many compositions for several levels. If you pick the good one for you, you should have good results pretty fast !

I can advise you to choose primavera, una mattina, fly or oltremare that I think are not too difficult in the rhythm as well as in the notes.

I love most the music when there is an orchestra or several instruments with the piano like in primavera, experience and many others, but I think that if I had to choose one it would be Divenire.
